Every parent knows the struggle of finding something fun, safe and screen-free for their kids to do, especially on those rainy days we've been having so much of lately in Chesapeake. The answer has arrived and is perfect for all children, of all ages and abilities: We Rock the Spectrum Kid's Gym, Chesapeake. This children's gym located in the Indian River section of Chesapeake, VA, will keep your kids active, spark their creativity, and help them explore new sensory experiences safely. My kids and I spent an afternoon there, thanks to the owners Whitney and Mary, and I have so much to share about our experience!
Infant and Toddler Friendly
When we came in, I noticed how clean, open and inviting the We Rock the Spectrum Kid's Gym felt. There are clear areas for infants and toddlers to play, using their active imaginations to play pretend in the toy kitchen, doctor's office and my daughter Noelle's favorite -- the bakery. Not to mention the train station, countless toy cars, toddler roller coaster (it's adorable and safe), and toddler size basketball hoop.
Calming Room
Sometimes kids can get sensory overload, and We Rock the Spectrum is prepared for such times with a Calming Room, set in the corner of the gym. There the lights are dimmed, it is quieter, and there is a sensory station on the wall along with a bean bag, some small toys, and another train set.
Twelve Pieces of Sensory Equipment
My older kids are 12 and 10 years old, and they were worried that We Rock the Spectrum Gym was just for little kids, but they were wrong (and even admitted it to me later!) They instantly gravitated to the huge trampoline, as well as the zip line, which was a big hit with all three of my older kids (my middle child is 6). There are also some hammock swings, a bolster swing, rock climbing wall, monkey bars, tunnel, carpet swing, climbing mountain, rope bridge, and swivel rotators. These pieces of equipment are simple yet fascinating to kids, who intuitively figure out how to make them rock and swing.
Many Ways to Play
You can come in for Open Play like we did, and just let your kids roam and explore freely. For more structured play, you can enroll your child in classes, summer camp or even book a birthday party. There are also drop-off opportunities called We Rock Care which offers respite for families with children of special needs and is also available to kids without a special needs diagnosis.
Safety
I'll be honest: my kids went all over the place, and as a mom of five, I'm used to constantly looking over my shoulder to make sure all of them are safe and accounted for. But I didn't have to worry because the layout makes it so easy to see all across the gym, and there is padding everywhere.
The Hardest Part is Leaving
As with all great adventures, our trip to We Rock the Spectrum Chesapeake had to come to an end, which was made possible by a little bribery with a sweet treat and promises of a yummy lunch. I hope your visit to the We Rock the Spectrum Kid's Gym is fun and ends without tears as well. I know we will be back, so hopefully you will see me and my wild crew of kids there!
