Whether your child is an infant or 8 years old, we all know the safest place for a child in the car is buckled in their carseat or booster seat. But how do we know that we have their carseat positioned the right way? Or if we put their carseat in the correct seat of the car? Or is their carseat buckled correctly or is the seat belt tight enough? These are all important things to consider when we drive anywhere with our young kiddos in the car.
Did you know?
- Infants should ALWAYS be rear-facing.
- Infants, toddlers and children should be seated in the back seat of the car.
- The car should have plenty of space for rear-facing carseats to recline. (Consult your carseat manual for instructions.)
- In Virginia infants and toddlers must stay rear-facing until age 2.
- It is recommended for child to stay rear-facing for as long as possible although a child over age 2 may face forward in an upright position.
- Use the carseat harness for as long as possible as the harness provides more crash protection than a booster seat and seat belt.
- Booster seats with seat belt for children at least 35" tall, weighing between 35 and 80lbs, help raise the child higher so the seat belt fits properly across the child's lap and across the chest.
