Why Play at We Rock the Spectrum Kids Gym in Chesapeake VA

How to engage all the senses with sensory-friendly playtime at We Rock the Spectrum

By Whitney King January 25, 2024

We Rock the Spectrum Chesapeake’s vision is to provide inclusive recreational spaces for individuals with sensory sensitivities, foster community engagement & well-being, and create a space where families can collectively share resources.

We Rock the Spectrum Chesapeake is centered around 12 main pieces of sensory equipment that emphasize stimulating any of the seven senses through positive physical, emotional, and social development. Some of those pieces include our custom crash pit, zip line, & zip box with slide attraction, climbing structures, our popular bolster swing, and custom rope bridge & climbing mountain. Each piece of additional equipment was hand-picked with our goal of encouraging children to “Play with A Purpose” in mind. We Rock the Spectrum Chesapeake ensures that all staff receive proper training before working directly with visiting guests.  All staff members and volunteers receive specialized training that includes the 40 Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) course, an introduction to developmental disabilities, an introduction to Autism,  and CPR/First Aid to name a few. The owner/operator, Whitney King (a Positive Behavior Support Facilitator) also takes opportunities to model various ways to provide support to children when an opportunity to do so arises.

We Rock the Spectrum Chesapeake is proud to be a part of the larger picture and create a solution for families that often struggle to find inclusive indoor playgrounds in our community. Promoting sensory-friendly playtime at We Rock the Spectrum Chesapeake is vital for several different reasons:

  • Sensory-friendly play ensures that children of all abilities can participate, fostering a sense of belonging and reducing social isolation for both the child and caregivers.
  • Sensory play supports various aspects of child development, including motor skills, cognitive skills, and emotional well-being.
  • Sensory-friendly environments help reduce stress for children who may be sensitive to certain stimuli, promoting a more enjoyable and comfortable play experience.
  • Sensory-friendly play encourages social interaction among children with diverse needs, which promotes understanding, empathy, and positive social skills.
  • Parents of children with sensory sensitivities are more likely to engage in play activities when they feel the environment is accommodating. This fosters a bonding within the parent-child relationship.
  • Sensory-friendly play provides unique learning opportunities, allowing children to explore and understand the world around them in a supportive setting.

In essence, engaging in sensory-friendly play at We Rock the Spectrum Chesapeake creates an environment where every child can thrive, learn, have fun, and BELONG.
